this album was recorded entirely using voice memos. each song was usually written, practiced, and then recorded in one or two sessions following the creation of the song. these songs were made to channel a feeling and i truly never intended to release them, just to write them for the love of songs and share in the vulnerability of the space of creation, a space that has nurtured me my entire life.

songs were recorded on pianos (and rhodes) in rooms where i have taught at GEMS World Academy, New Music School, Montessori Academy of Chicago, Solo Classic, my rehearsal space at fort knox studios and my parents house in Sunshine Canyon

some rooms had more natural reverb, others were extremely dry, some pianos in-tune and well maintained, others with immense color and character from years of use and good lovin'

i woke up one day, and started sifting through my voice memos. of the 100 or so voice memos, these stuck out, and were all recorded more mostly in 2018 and 2019

the charm of this process hearkens to an older age of recording, where musicians would live in a studio and have time and patience and money on their side to be free and let things happen naturally in a studio setting.

recording using voice memos on a phone, only required the phone and the room, which i had moments in teaching to practice and write.

over 2018 and 2019 i kept developing this process and infusing it with play. i'd sit down and write a song, and try to record it when i felt i had done it justice, sometimes a take or two was all it needed, and maybe for a few i did max 7 takes, or picked up the song in the next session or next day to finish it. and then i would leave it, forget about it, not touch it.

watching mid 80's Bob Dylan interviews must have rubbed off on me, as he talks about the quickness he believes a song needs to be brought to life. and the more mystery proliferates your art as a result. a quality or feeling not of knowing of something but of being something or recognizing something that was already there

this album does not have any studio sheen. only gentle processing and mixing, and slight mastering. what it has is a quality in music that is missing. "that was real as the day is long" as Neil Young says. a quality of music that is there in early folk, jazz, and blues recordings of the 20th century. an atmosphere that you have to fill a room with your music to produce the music and share it with your audience in real time. a certain live element that The Grateful Dead embody, as Jerry says, "limitless possibility"

talking with the old men at phish in deer creek, they spoke of how the phone has soured the mystique of live performance. the magic of only sharing in that moment with the people who were there. a certain human quality that has been shattered by the rapid infusion of technology into the entertainment industry. you can take videos, take it home, post it to your story, for all your friends to see, and that connectivity is unprecedented, their only angle is that there is a cost. and the cost of connectivity is a certain shallowness that pervades everything.

it is still a miracle to watch videos of Miles Davis perform at Isle of Wight with his electric band. as an artist i feel responsibility to keeping this messy spirit alive
