The next morning before first light she was out the door. She left a note and took with her her pack and the rifle that hung over the door. On foot she headed northward deeper into the forest. The spruce and maple and pine and birch shivered in muted grayness; the eternal twilight of an overcast dawn. No sign of anything. She crouched down resting on calf. She listened and scanned. A bird cawed and she heard the beating of wings as she looked upwards: two ravens westward. They disappeared below the tree line.

Removing the rifle from her shoulder, she levered the action. A shell rested in the chamber. It clicked close. She trudged forward.
The density of the woods lessened opening up and revealing a plot of downed trees. Above a thick plumage of clouds rolled eastward in a pale white that dimly glew. She could hear them, the carrion. Quickening her pace she traversed the open expanse arriving to the source. Ravens were picking at the milky white eyes of a now bluing rigid doe carcass. The doe’s tongue was lolled out and frozen. She shooed the ravens, glancing around for something that was no longer there. Inspecting the scene, she knelt at the carcass and lowered the rifle unshouldering her pack and unsheathing her knife.
She prodded into the doe’s gut. It was frozen. She couldn’t get the knife in and shifted around the carcass and began sawing into the thigh working the frozen flesh. She removed paper from her pack spreading it open on the snow and began chunking the thigh onto the paper. Hard at work.

She looked up, consumed in trance. She had felt something and scanned, focusing her vision towards movement in the foliage at the edge of the opening. She slowly rose from her kneeling position; she was still. The fawn’s head tilted curiously and began again to paw at the snow. She followed suite, her boot carefully padding the snow. The fawn continued to stomp in similar fashion exchanging equal rhythms of boot and snow, hoof and snow. She stopped locked in gaze with the creature. The fawn stepped forward. She glanced towards the rifle. The fawn stopped. Silence, strong and contemplative. She leaned towards the gun. The fawn’s tail rose and it was gone. Foliage bounced lively.
